Well guys, karma is a funny animal, as soon as I start advocating the 5.4 mine starts to give me trouble.
I was out on a date last night with the little lady, and pulled of to a stop light, sittin there it just idled lower and lower until it died. Then it fired right up and hasn't given me any more trouble. Keep in mind it was 16 degrees when this happened.
My first thought is fuel filter, perhaps it has some water in it and had froze or was just full of junk? But why would it just fire back up and give me no problems?
Second thought is fuel pump getting weak? Still, it feeds the beast just fine under all other conditions?
Third though, bad gas? It has a tank of Amoco 89 in there, no where near empty.
After we left dinner I noticed a puddle of blue liquid in the snow by where the the the fender meets the driver side door. All my windshield washer fluid is the pink de-icing stuff... any clue what another blue fluid may be?!?!
I am completely at a loss here guys, and it's even more embarrassing because the little lady is a chevy girl I can't give her any more reasons to hate the SD...
My truck does the same exact thing. Then i start it up and it runs like a champ. When u start ur truck up on moist days, does it start then stall out. The only way that u can start it is to rev it? Mine also does that SOMETIMES, but its rare.
My answer to ur problem is ur IAC (idle air control) valve? (it allows ur truck to idle) How many miles r on ur truck?

I have 130K, and I am guessing the IAC is original. I guess it could have froze and got finicky. I have never had an issue starting it, but the IAC makes sense.
Never had one go bad before, so I don't know what it feels like when it does.
I have heard about them going bad between 100k to 140k. Id replace it, they arent that expensive and they are easy to replace. Im pretty sure they are right behind the throttle body. I would go down to the v-10 forum and tell them that their little brother (the 5.4) is in trouble. Theyll give u the directions on replacing the IAC.

Well thanks a lot! I appreciate it, I'll find that bugger. I had to replace them in the older TPI camaros so i should even have a socket for one.
No problem, just go ask for the step by step instructions and they will give them to u. Im pretty sure its on their the same way as the v10, since they share all of the same parts. Good luck, post the results!
You won't need a special socket for the IAC. Just remove the purdy cover on top of the intake manifold, and you will see the IAC at the top/back or the manifold. Unplug the harness, undo the two bolts that hold it on, (I think 10MM), and reverse with the new one.
I asked the guys here and they posed a pic of it and circled it with a yellow pen....I removed it cleaned it with carb cleaner and a wire brush , reinstalled it (all took about 20 mins) and put 200,000 miles on it no problems since....yea they are 10mm bolts
FLATLINE911-----Wow 200K on a cleaned one? I have tried that before and have heard form others that cleaning was a very temporary fix. Nice catch on that one.
Wow, I love ford even more! the general makes them 1-1/8" socket size and they have the bolt portion way up on the front so you have to purchase the "mega deepwell" to service them. I got 10mm and a can of carb cleaner! let the fun begin
