my 351m

I have 78 f-150 2wd long bed with the 351m and I would like to get more power out of it I have a edelbrock 4 bbl carb on it now and would like to get some headers for it. how do I go about getting more power out of this engine? and what would be involved in turning it into a 400? thanks.

400 crank, and 400 pistons makes it a 400. Searching through the pages here, you'll see several references to Aussie heads, Comp DEH 265 cams, "straight-up" timing sets (Cloyes is one), Edelbrock Performer intakes, etc... Talking with Tim Meyer, this forum's sponsor, will get ya where you want to be with it. Good luck

will I have to bore the engine cylinders out to make the 400 pistons to fit? and where can I find a 400 crank?

its always a good idea to start with a fresh bore when doing a rebuild...talk to Tim Meyer, he sells 400 cranks and pistons

The 351m pistons are the same bore as the 400, but if you're rebuilding the engine it will probably need to be bored out anyways.

But like everyone said, check out tmi, they have pretty much everything you need.

That's right, the 351M and 400 blocks are identical. Only the stroke changes when you change the crank, so the 351M pistons are taller to accomodate the change. The rods are the same also.

Many people will overbore to .030 when the bores are fairly decent already, just to get rid of taper and wear, so you just get your machinist to work with you and order the correct overbore pistons.
Browse this forum's topics to see what can be done, and look at Tim's site to see what he offers.

Only bore the block if you have too. Many times you can clean up a block with a hone job OR just a .020" overbore. Get the cylinders checked for taper first and then see if you can clean it up with no more than a .020" cut. TMI sells the pistons in that size. If you only go .020" over then you still have another .020" safely left for a clean up bore should you need to rebuild the engine another 100K or more down the road. Most guys just default bore to .030" even if the motor doesn't need it which is just wasting iron and slightly weakening the bore.

my 351 has 96,000 miles on it so I don't know how long it will be until it needs to be rebuilt. I might be better off to get another 351 block and build another engine that I could just swap in when the time comes. what do you guys think?

not a bad idea, since these engines aren't GOLD in the junk yards yet.

money in the end is the answer....how much do ya want to spend. In my neck of the woods (mud truck country) most all 460's have been scoured from the junkyards. In doing so, they overlooked all the 351M/400's. With TMeyerinc, CHI, and a select few others, the 400 is starting to get noticed. It's what you have in your truck, so a direct replacement isn't too bad. Swapping in a 460 requires motor mount adapters, radiator, aftermarket headers, plus the cost to build a 460. Granted, there's no replacement for displacement, but money in the end always makes my decisions. Good luck either way ya go.

how much horsepower and torque could I get out of a 351/400 cause my truck might be towing a 26' camp trailor. and I would like the extra power for towing. and what could I do to the engine that's already in my truck to get more out of it without rebuilding it? thanks.
