I got my engine back from my engine builder after it was run in on the dino and it appears that it will be awhile before I will get it back in the truck. My question is, should I do anything to protect it till that happens? The fuel was run out of the carb and the run in oil is still in the pan. What should I do? Help, Tom
i would drain the oil and then squirt some oil into the cylinders thru the spark plugs and turn the motor over by hand a few times to coat the cylinders. also take the valve covers off and pour some oil over the rockers to make sure they are protected.
also plug or tape off all openings so nothing can get inside.
you wnat to drain the oil and replace with fresh stuff since the oil is probably contaminated after running it on the dyno. before starting it, drain that oil and replace and prime the engine before starting it up.
Get 2 cans of Boeshield T9 at west marine. Remove the spark plugs spray a good 10-15 secs in each cyl put plugs back. Then spray the whole engine till its dripping from the spray carb linkage everything .Then use 2 or 3 large 55gal contractor trash bags around motor and seal her up. No condensation or moisture issues. Good luckgar
Probably a bad idea to change the breakin oil until you've run the motor for several hundred miles or several hours at part throttle or higher. You can change the filter if you are nerveous and top off the oil level.
Good breakin oil for flat tappit cam shafts is difficult to obtain. You never know and the motor builder could have put a good brake in oil in there for the cam shaft. Some people use Shell Rotella plus GM oil supplement. The GM stuff is $10.00 a quart, don't waste it.
ATF, engine oil and similar light oils work well to protect cylinder walls for engine storage. DO NOT drain the oil out off the oil pan. The oil absorbs moisture, thus doing its job.
I once watched Jack Roush use a gallon of some type of oil (looked like motor oil) to choke his motor while running it at 2000 RPM. Thats how he stores them.
