First of all, I am thrilled to come upon this site. Here is my question or I guess I should say questions. My first question is this. What type of transmission fluid would my 1992 F-150 4.9l 300 use. I have been extremely happy with it, it has almost 200,000 miles on it, but lately it is starting to "chatter" or rind for lack of a better word when I first start out or back up. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission. I changed fluid about 3 months ago and put dexron 3 in. This is what they told me at the auto parts store. I happened to ask another store the other day and he said I shouldv'e used 90 weight. Can someone tell me which is right. Also what my problem could be.It is still full as I have checked. Second question is this, what type of mileage is everyone else getting? I have never gotten better than 13...even on the highway. It is well maintained as far as plugs, wires, cap and rotor etc.. Thanks in advance for the help.
I had a similiar symptom (more like a squeak or squeel) on my '79. It was the u-joints making the noise. Noticable in reverse, first few turns of the driveshaft when in drive, and when coming to a stop - the last few turns of the driveshaft. I ended up lifting the back end of the truck up, engaging the truck in drive and partially setting the parking break to provide resistance. I got under the truck and listened well. After a new set of U-joints - no more noise. You need to be more specific on your tranny type about the fluid.
I have a '94 F150 4x4 with 3.55 gears and an inline 6 and I usually get around 12 mpg in the city and 13.5 on the highway. If your truck is 2 wheel drive and has the 3.08 I would hope you would do a little bit better than 13 mpg but some don't. The inline six is wonderful (yet unpredictable) thing!!
Which transmission do you have???? That will make a diference as to what fluid you put in it.
As for grind, squeak, rattle on first few revolutions when starting out (FWD or REV), more often than not it's "U" joints. Don't just replace 1, replace them all and make sure the onle you get have grease fittings on them..
I'm sorry about not specifying transmission. It was kinda late here. It's a 5 speed. Also, about the "grind"... the u-joints are less than 6 months old. They would kinda churp when I first took off. This is more of a grind and it happens until I get to about 5mph and/or let out on the clutch completely. Could it be in the clutch? Also, the noise can almost be fealt. When I am driving and it happens i can feel it w/ my feet if you know what I mean.
With the truck in Neutral and RUNNING, lightly press foot on clutch till all the slack is out and continue to press another 1/2". If you feel/hear grind your throwout bearing is getting ready to go south. What your doing here is putting pressure on the bearing. Sometimes they will rumble or grind when free wheeling and silence when clutch is pressed down.
If you only hear/feel it when moving....start looking for another transmission.
Had the same problem, same symptoms, was told it was the throw out bearing and started sweating a 200-300 $$ project (figured I'd replace the clutch while I was down there). As a last ditch effort I pulled off the U-joints (bearings were disentagrated), replaced them, and no more noise. My question is at what speed does the rumbling sound start?

Thanks for the replies. The rumbling ...actually more of a grind... starts as soon as I get moving and stops at about 5mph or as soon as the clutch is let all the way out. It doesn't do it after I am going or if I just do a rolling stop and go on. It only happens from a dead stop going in reverse or 1st. The U-joints are less than a year old and have been greased. Like I said before it's almost like I can feel the grind right under my feet as I get going. Other than this, I haven't had any problems with the truck. The I-6 is the best motor I've had.
