After looking at several catalog listings for a mount kit to put a 351W in my '60 I'm confused. They all looked the same, but one listing stated "not for use with IFS front end". Since I plan to upgrade to MII, are these kits not usable for my purpose?
The idea is that the Must. II front end has a rack and pinion steering witha crossmember that would interfere with any type of tubular engine mount set-up.
Hi Mike
When I purchased my Fatman Fab kit, the salesman asked me what engine I was using. I informed him that I was using a flathead with the stock mounts and that I didn't require other motor mounts. When you purchase your kit, talk to the salesman about motor mounts and they should be able to help you.
Most of the MII kits I looked at had the motor mounts as part of the crossmember. You had to order the correct mount when you ordered the crossmember, and it was usually welded in the proper spot for you. Since boxing the frame in the crossmember area is a standard MII practice, you'll have to remove any of the bolt in, tubular mounts that are made for stock front suspension. Either jump right into the MII and be done with it, or use one of the tubular mounts and stock beam axle, and plan on changing it later.
IIRC some of the mounts have to have some trick shapes to allow the steering shaft to pass. Best to use the ones the IFS manufacturer knows will work with his crossmember and steering setup IMHO.
Thanks fellas, I think I'll wait on the engine swap until I can do the front end at the same time. I'll just run the 223 for a while since there is really nothing wrong with it.
