Question How do you remove a 4wd hub??

I need to replace my rotors on the 87 f150 4x4 but have auto locking hubs (american racing). I can't figure out how to get to the lock nut after removing the cap. Does anyone have instructions (pics help)?

You have the flange hubs... so they are different than any other Ford hub. They were only used in 1987 and for a few 1988 trucks. Keep this in mind when you get answers from people who don't know this and think your truck is the same as theirs.

I've never taken apart (or even seen) a flange hub, so I can't help much.

Ford used a a ratcheting lock nut. Go to your local auto parts store and ask for a 4wheel drive hub socket for your truck. it is a specail socket, about 2 inch diameter with 3 prongs that stick out. Line up the 3 prongs with the 3 holes on the lock nut and unscrew the lock nut. Very simple but you must have this socket.

Same size, but it doesn't matter as his hubs are completely different.

IT has the 4 prong nut and a funnylooking locking washer. Then u pull the wheelbearings should slide right off. I have the flange style and stuff like bearings and such are hard to get unless u go there with old stuff

No, actually it increased the size of all the posted images at the same time, I made the image larger at the source, not each of the individual posts. Didn’t want to go to big and stretch the board so I went a little at a time.

And yea, I see now he has "American racing" hubs, some how I missed that part.

Only 87's with manual hubs have the oddball setup from what I've seen. Auto hub trucks have normal lockouts.

I guess I may have read the whole thing wrong, is the problem getting the lockout apart or getting the wheel bearing lock nuts off? I read it as they needed to get the lockout apart.

And yea the 87 with a D44, manual lockouts have a different lock nut.

If the problem is the lock nut, they just need to tell the guy at the auto parts exactly what axle they have, then they'll get the right tool to remove them.

I don't even know where to start after I get the cap off! I don't see any bolts or nuts. It's like I have to pull the spring and pieces behind it out first before I can get that special socket on there. Maybe I am better off taking it somewhere to get the rotors turned or new ones installed? It just seems like something I should be able to do myself for a fraction of the price!

Look, dig around in the grease real good, regardless of "make" of hub you should find snap ring holding the collar in place that the cap bolts screw into. Probably in a grove just inside the inner edge of the hub. The image I posted is a stock auto locking hub, A after market should be kinda similar in the way it is held in place if nothing else, the snap ring may look different also.

Once you figure it out the first time it will be easy from then on when you need to fix it, don’t give up to easy.
