I opened up the diff cover and...

I opened up the diff cover because my truck (99 F150 2WD) has been making that annoying humming sound. So I opened the cover and saw nothing wrong with the gears or anything. I checked for metal shavings and showed my instructor at school and he said it just looked like normal "wear and tear" shavings which were very very small. You can hardly see the shavings. But I went ahead and changed the fluid and gasket, and it still makes the annoyinh noise. But as I was inspecting the rear end I saw a bunch of fluid where the carrier bearing is, maybe the carrier bearing is the problem? Would a bad carrier bearing make that humming noise? what are yall's thoughts?

Thanks, Trey

Yeah carrier bearings can cause these symptoms BUT since the case is shimmed for proper backlash the movement would be very minimal. Look at the bearing race surface for pitting or etching, same goes for the roller bearings & their cage for any wear or corrosion or looseness also. The Drive pinion bearing can be bad too and allow not enough backlash clearance between gears causing a humming. Mainly it is that drive pinion bearing &/or crush sleeve that is shot.
