I have an 85 F150 with a 351W. I was driving up to college this year and got about 550 miles from home when the truck quite running. I ended up having to have it towed the last 60 miles to college only to discover I have no compression on cylinder 2. (This motor was freshly rebuilt not even a year ago). Unfortuanately, It was done by a friend of mine and carries no warrenty. So I was thinking maybe I should find a shortblock and throw my stuff on there and be good to go since everything else has been gone thorough including the heads. Does anyone know of a good place to get cheap-ish shortblocks for this truck? It has a 4V Holley on her. Everything is stock just like the factory.
Were you hard on the motor? Or drive it like a grandma, with only a few full throttles? Is it a manual? It will run a little rough like said above, but shouldnt stop it. Should sound/feel like a miss. Shouldnt of had to tow it home, just limp it home, I'm sure something else is wrong with the motor, or i just may have a suspicion!
No i wasnt hard on the truck at all. I changed oil every 1500 miles and babied it all the time. The truck does run but blows smoke like no ones business and runs real warm. It has a C6 auto trans in it. I couldnt get the thing to start back up at all when it died on me. And it was going through oil like no ones business as well. All the other cylinders have the proper compression so I dont really know what is wrong other than the number two cylinder has no compression and yes it does run with a miss.
Pull the valve cover and check the rockers, pushrods and springs. If you got a shortblock you will have to transfer a few parts including the heads. That's why I mention checking valve train first.
Already did that everything looks good and each of the rockers move like they are supposed to and the springs arent broke. I was thinking a blown piston too.
Does anyone know anything about P.A.W? I dont want to go with autozone or advanced auto because having worked on cars for awhile now I have had nothing but trouble with the crap they call parts.
You can do what I did. I beat the bushes and found a nice running 79 cougar with a 351w in it. I heard it run and it sounded good. It had no title and I got it for $200. I pulled it home, took the engine out, put a new timing chain in it along with the oil pickup tube and the rear sump oil pan, and stuck it in. Fit just right, and ran 5 more years till I sold it.
Yeah thats what I thought about doing but I am kinda worried about the motor giving out cause I have to take it from Indiana to Minnesota and I cant have it breaking down on me any time.
