I have a 73 f100 manual 4x4 with a 302. No radio, no AC, basic stuff. The only electrical addition is front and rear off road lights.
When my truck is running the voltage at the battery is 12v or just under. I am on my second battery in 2 weeks. I have replaced the alt and volt regulator because I figured that would resolve the issue. It has not.
I know that the voltage at the batt should be over 14 but if the truck is running or not the voltage is about 12 until the battery is drained that is. So it seems that some how the battery is not charging.
Also, is the stator wire from the alt to the volt regulator required?
Reason I ask is that when I took off my alt and hooked it back up, the stator was connected to the alt, but the wire was actually never hooked up to anything. It was ziptied to the harness.
If you have a "gen" light in the dash, then yes you do need the stator wire. Is the "gen" light working in the dash with the key on, but the engine off?
I figured out what is wrong! The truck was wired all wrong. The person that wired the alt and volt reg did it so it somehow would run. I was able to rewire the whole thing and its up and running. The person that had it hooked up before had the batt(contstant power) hooked up to the field but grounded too, had the field hooked up to the batt and everything into the volt regulator was not done right. He had used the wire harness and rigged his own wires to it and made a mess. Went to the salvage yard and got a new one, Rewired it and now my lights are brighter and battery is charging.
