What are the signs of a bad or going bad brake booster?
Mine is original, 125k...and I'm having braking trouble.
I've got 100% all new brakes except for front calipers. When I hit the brakes, they feel weak. I don't feel like they're very strong, that something has changed.
I can't stop that well anymore and I don't find any reason to suggest one particular brake is malfunctioning and I'm wondering if maybe my booster is gone. I feel like I have go-kart brakes on my truck instead of real brakes.
I would think a malfunctioning booster would give you a hard pedal becasue it is not providing enough assist. With the truck turned off, if you pump the pedal do you hear the vacuum of the booster?
I don't have a "hard" pedal, such as if the engine is off, but I havn't tried it with that in mind. I usually have to push hard anyway...just that the results of that effort seem different.
I'm going to pull the master cyl off a little and see if I can find fluid leaking into the booster.
I would check out those lines while your at it, it doesnt have to leak to get a problem in your line. I would try bleeding those lines out to make sure your alright too. I had a truck that did the same and replaced everything on the braking system (88 silverado) and it never solved the problem until I put an external brake booster on it. Brakes on 88 and 89 silverado's are commonly known for this. Check the seals on that master cylinder as well. Also try adjusting those rear drums by going in reverse and braking a few times before you get to the gritty.
