Replaced the cps about a month ago as the truck died and had the bad cps symptoms you would expect. While I was on the truck I did a bunch of other needed maintenance to the truck like change the wp, replace gps, clean filter screens, etc.. Ran like brand new...for about 60 miles. Then when I needed it the other day, it refused to start. No smoke, no hitting/missing, nothing. Checked the fuel pressure, the various fuses, connections, fuel filter, etc.. nothing mattered. Even hooked up the block heater (outside temp was 45deg) for a couple hours but no luck. I KNEW it wasn't the cps because I just changed it out. But what the hell. I had the spare in the glovebox so I replaced it and wouldn't you know it, the truck fired right up. Damn new cps only lasted a few miles.
What's the latest consensus on the best cps? I'm using the IH 1821720C99 right now which I can get for $38 bucks at IH. I remember somewhere there was a newer, better (and cheaper!) one around.
Oh, almost forgot: I still got about 2-300rpm on the tach while I was cranking, even with a bad cps. Does this mean something else is wrong?
After being warmed UP, If you put that "bad" CPS back and it would not start. Then you could say with 100 % certainty that it was CPS and nothing else.
I got mine from Powerstroke Shop. I believe they have the cheapest price. When you replaced the CPS did you get the "updated" part? It has a "B" in the part number instead of an "A". Supposed to be better than the old one. I think most stealerships still sell the old one. Thos CPS's can be tricky to diagnose.
