Doesn't shift into OD after new gauge cluster?

Well i finally jumped back in the ol Ford and I noticed that the gauge cluster was different (some dumb mechanic). The mileage is lower than its suppose to be and I'm guessing the cluster is from an E4OD tranny ( P R N OD 2 1). My old AOD pattern was P R N OD D 1.

Anyways, while cruising at 70mph, the RPMs are around 2500.... if i remember correctly, they used to be close to 2000 at that speed. That seems really high for having 3.55 gears... I'm thinking its not going into OD. So i'm curious if maybe that different gauge cluster has something to do with it?? Does anyone know?

Either way its still 3 positions so it should shift into OD.

The TC not locking up will make it seem like its not shifting into OD also.

I pay real close attention to what its doing and go from there, does turning OD off make it down shift?

The original one was a 93. I don't know about the new one... In fact, absolutely nothing was wrong with the original cluster. The truck was sent to a mechanic to change the heater core, and it came back with that new cluster.... idiot mechanic.

You sent it to a mechanic to change the heater core? Changing the core is about as complicated and physically easier than changing a flat tire.
Your "idiot" mechanic just swapped out the gauge cluster for fun and didn't tell you or charge you?
You are joking eh?

Only reason I didn't do it is because I wasn't driving it at the time, I'm driving it temporarly for now. Trust me, bud, i can do a LOT more than changing a heater core.

And yea the mech. is a jackass considering he didn't tell anyone about swapping the cluster, as well as leaving a mess of wires (whyyy?), and breaking some A/C vents.

Anyways, drove it around and it does shift into OD, still gets the same MPG as well (lol 13MPG). I think the tach is probably mis-reading.

Uh...I'd take it back it knock him so hard he might actually know what the hell he was doing......might even have to take a few buddies to get me off of him cause when I get ticked I see black and it's done.

I would be livid to say the least. I'd be paying that mechanic a visit...
FWIW, my 95 F250 4x4, 460, E4OD, 3.55 gears turns about 1800 rpm (indicated on factory tach) at 65 mph.

well the tach should not matter in the least I swap em all time and never see a big change in rpms. Yank cluster and check back circuit board for number like F2 or F3 OrFT2 or FT3 the 2 and3 are the years that fit your truck.

As for shift indicator Its on there with 3 screws 2 on cluster and 1 holding end cable by shifter. If he was in dash he probably broke yours (easy to do ) and grabed the first 1 he saw .If I had a good one I'd send it to you. As for the vents ? You dont even have to remove them at all to swap core. I think he was borrowing good parts.

cluster

The wire that goes up to the auto OD on-off shifter button can easily be damaged if he was careless about installing the new cluster. Then the truck would not go into OD.

The Tachometer is set for a 6-cyl engine. You need to ground pin #10 of the C250. This can happen if the circuit #398 a black wire with a yellow stripe is open or loses its ground.
Swapping clusters will not help you, as this should be in the wiring harness.
