I'm going under the covers tomorrow to install new GP's. Never done it and was wondering if there are any do's or don'ts that I need to know beforhand?
yes, there is a pocket that holds oil right below the glowplug. If you dont remove the oil in the pocket like 1cc or so of oil gets into the cylinder. I think its faster just to remove the GPs and crank than trying to remove the oil with a rag.
Passenger side bottom one by the firewal was the worst for me. Get something to put on top of the radiator so your knes will survive. Do just like the others have said. It took me about 8 hours (but Im very slow and not a mechanic) keep your cool.
The Pass. side valve cover was no problem once I got the torch out and cut the little SOB in half. I found two (2) dead GP's and one that was un plugged. Might as well have been dead.
After replacement I covered the pass. side of the engine with "Reynolds wrap" which is working quite well except for a minor oil seepage which I will compensate for by carrying a large quanity of oil.

No problems.

With all you have done it must run like a swiss watch now.
Biggest problem with gp's is if you break one trying to remove.
My question has allway's been. The use of Antisezure compounds yes/no. Possible it might make matters worse?
Naw...I really didn't do any of the above but the torch idea did flash before my eyes. I have come to the conclusion that the same guy that designed the Cali fule pump and location is also responsable for designing the engine compartment.
He needs to be found and beat by every OBS owner that we can find. I finally did get the pass. cover off but I'm really in no mood to try to put it back on tonight.
Does anyone have a clue as to the purpose of that "Horse shoe" thingy that mounts on the rear of the drivers valve cover?
Not much oil drained into the combustion chambers but I guess for safty sake I should cover everything up and cycle the engine a time ar two (2).
I really can't understand even if the dish in the top of the piston was full whats going to make it squirt out of the GP hole? Hmmmmmm I'll do it though.
I'm also not sure if only three (3) bad GP's would give me any indication of slow starting. I sure wish I had my stage I's Anybody know an extremlly rich widow that is hungry for an old man???? Bingo, I'd have my stage I's. lol
