On my way to my gf's house today I went playing in a little feild! my tires being as close to bald as possible with out blowing out, was not a good idea! I got a little hung up, put it in 4wd but did not lock in the hubs, due to the fact the once turning peice is missing and I havn;t replaced it yet, damn deer! but anyways I put it in 4wd and backed up a little and all, could not get it to lock in..Isn;t it supose to work even without the hubs being lock?
If you have the ESOF system, then the 4x4 works with a vacuum actuator to the hubs. It works best if the truck is moving either forward or backward...but moving. If you are stuck...and hope the hubs engage after turning the 2HI to 4HI switch...you are just asking for trouble. That is one of the reasons FORD engineers designed the hubs to have a manual locking feature for such instances. Apparently...your hubs are missing a major piece...so the hub is not able to hold a vacuum.
thanks, yes, I am missing the piece that turns inside the hub, and the other side i can't even get to turn!!! IM going to order the warn manual hubs now, install them and see what happens. So if I am missing that piece, they will not work at all?
Based on your description...YES...they (both) hubs will not engage. If you are missing a piece...and the other will not turn by hand, then it sounds like replacements are needed.
However...I have used WARN hubs in the past...and my '76 F150 (see sig) has a set of WARN hubs now for 4+ years...and have had no problems. I usually stick with what I know...unless I have a bad experience.
OBTW: Never have used Mile Maker, but here they are good quality from other FTE folks.
Good luck deciding...but I think you will be happy either way.
