rear fender replacement patch

I found that one of my rear fenders has some pretty bad rust where the running boards bolts onto . I have seen replacement sections for this area in some of the catalogs, but they dont look like they have the holes pre drilled for the running board. Is it easy just to drill the holes and then use a sort of support bracket on the back side to help hold the running board?

Thanks,

Matt

You can transfer/mark the holes from the running board onto the fender after the patch is welded in. I like to clamp it up, then use spray paint to mark the holes. It is easier to drill the holes that way.

You can make a patch for that area easily also.

Yes. The doubler (bracket) spreads the load of the attach bolts and keeps the holes from cracking or tearing out, Unfortunately, it also collects water, which is why the fender needs patching. I just tacked the doubler in and then used seam sealer all around it to keep the water out. If you don't use a doubler, the holes will eventually tear out. I drilled the holes after the doubler was installed.
