New computer, a few ?'s

I recently bought a new computer and I have a few questions. First, how do I transfer files from old to new? I'm talking pics, documents, saved game files, etc. Next, is Windows Vista any good, or is it loaded with problems? I'm looking forward to changing over, the new should be a lot faster than the old.

I wouldn't have Vista on anything I own. It's a total POS

The easiest way to transfer your files would be through a network connection. This assumes you're using a router to connect to the internet. Otherwise you could look into an online back up service that you could "restore" to your new computer, or go to an office supply store. You can buy a USB to USB transfer cable and software to transfer data between computers.

When I built my new machine I took the hard drive out of the old one and installed it as a slave drive in the new machine. I just copied everything from the old drive to the new, minus the old windows folder files.

For pictures, documents, etc that are under 1 GB the best way in my opinion is to go by a jump drive (USB drive). You can get one for under 10 bucks at target or radio shack or anywhere else. Copy and paste the files onto the USB drive just like a floppy disk and put them on the new computer. Plus then you have a portable hard drive. I even got a 4GB drive the day after thanksgiving for $25. No network connections to set up at all and they just plug and play without any work from you.

I second the fact that Vista sucks. I had to buy all new programs. I used a backup drive to transfer after I installed the new programs. It was still a pain. Microsoft should be embarrassed for putting this out.

Do what Jimbo said. Use the factory HD as the primary (0), then use the old one as a slave (1). Set up your BIOS to boot from the primary though, or you will run into problems.

I've yet to see anything positive from consumers on Vista. I don't like the idea that some(if not all) of my connected stuff(printers, scanners, etc) may not work with Vista. I looked at those flash(USB) drives yesterday, probably the route I'll go with.

We just got a new business computer (Got XP through Dell) and I used the usb drive thing and it worked great. I have used it on the last computers also. It is a great thing to have to.

I bought an enclosure just for the reason you mentioned in the O/P.

I'd go with the network connection. That way you're not tearing apart the old computer, so you can use it someplace else.

You could also just burn stuff to DVD-R. With photos that's a really good idea anyway, since you presumably don't want to ever lose them.

I'm in no hurry to try Vista; heck, I only recently started using that new-fangled XP. It's not too bad, once you get it fixed to work like 2000.

Sure your programs from XP work, but I have Win98 on the current computer. I guess I'll find out this week how everything works.

This is what I did when transfering things to my new laptop from my old destktop. It took a while but it worked great.

Make sure you try Vista compatibility mode too if the program doesn't work the first time around.
