I just got a 87 Ranger yesterday for free. It's a 2.3 fuel injected four cylinder. It has a problem though, it has an up and down idle when cold and then when it warms up it has a lowend bog. You have to rev it up pretty high and slip the clutch to get it to go. It acts as if it's rich, you can smell unburned fuel. It has a new timing belt, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and airfilter. Also what year did they put check engine lights in these trucks? Any sugestions? Thanks.
If the ignition and camshaft timing are spot on, I would take a look at the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.
Also, make sure the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have a busted diaphragm. Pull the hose off the regulator and check for gas in the hose. If it has gas, the regulator is bad. The regulator is on the fuel rail toward the front of the engine, a little hat looking devce.
I went through and checked the Cam timing and it was good. I also checked the fuel pressure regulator hose and it was dry. I also went through the vaccume hoses and they seem good. Where is the plug located at that you have to unplug to set your timing? I couldn't find it today. Also where is the coolant temp sensor located? Thanks
Since I like doing things the easy way, I have the EVTM for all my Fords.
The 87 Ranger EVTM shows the ECT on the drivers side of the engine slightly to the right side of the intake plenum. Wires are black/white stripe & light green/yellow stripe.
The spout connector is at the corner of the battery tray closest to the engine. Both wires are dark green/yellow stripe.
Open the spout & you can check ignition timing.
An 87 is not equipped with a check engine light. The only way to know if there are any trouble codes is to hook up a scanner.
The connectors for the scanner are under the hood near the heater blower motor. One is 4 wire & the other a single wire.
Connect a scanner & in a couple of minutes you will know if there are any trouble codes that can help you sort this problem out.
The scanner will also tell you if the PCM is able to properly advance the ignition timing by 20 degrees.
Anytime your Ranger is not running as it should, the first thing to do is to pull the codes.
I fixed it today. We ran a scan on it and It ended up being two things. One was the timing was way to far advanced. The other was the map sensor. Actually one of the three wires was pushed out of the harness and wasn't making contact. It was busted so I cut it out and soldered in a new one. It seems to be fine now no more bogs or hesitation. Thanks guys for all the help.
