you'll need to turn up the pump but be carefull not to much if you have restricted exhaust and stock air cleaner.
on the pass side of the injector pump there's a small cover with 2 bolts take the cover off (you'll spill alittle fuel) and if you have a small mirror this next part will help, you'll have to find the opening that allows you to turn up the fuel (its a small allan dont remember the size) once you find the opening turn the screw only 1/4 turn at a time,(clockwise) i gave mine a 1/4 a recieved alot of black when pulling hard. put cover back on and your done, only takes about 5 min. once you do it once.
let me know if you need any more help, tony

First it was the stereos. Had to get bigger and bigger till your sitting a a stoplight and a young kid pulls up beside you and your teeth rattle because he has more invested in the stereo than the car, and I guess he feels you need to enjoy it with him.

Then it was the wheels. Had to get bigger wheels and low profile tires. 17", 18"....20", 24"...where will it end?

Now it's started with the diesels. We have to put on "stacks" and make lots of obnoxious smoke.

I guess I am getting old or something.

Just goggle pyrometer installation for how too... there should be one on this page.... somewhere. Pyrometer tells you exhaust temps..... which indicate cylinder temps depending on how far away from the cylinder they are installed in the exhaust..... aluminum pistons will melt at 1250*F.

My N/A 7.3 with ram air, headers, and 4" exhaust is turned up just under 1 1/2 flats of the allen screw, or just under 1/4 turn. With a 7000 lb load and pedal to the floor up hill, I am blowing black smoke- not a lot, and my EGT will max out at 1200., at that point I back off ther pedal a bit, black smoke almost gone and reduces to 1150 EGT.
My point is if you are just looking for black smoke, your likely to melt down your engine.
My EGT probe is mounted in the header, just out of #6 cylinder.

1100-1150 would be my bet, nothing over that for long periods of time, but I have no room to talk, I don't have one.

Hope to get one soon.

thanks for the advice. I dont need to melt my engine so i will leave it alone for now. Whats are some mods that i can do for performance that will not cost to much? The truck is bone stock.

Take the aircleaner lid off and cut the large piece hanging down in the middle out. If you want to find some more threads on this, search for "+soup +bowel". And you can add a air duct to the aircleaner snorkel.

Larger exhaust will help too. But the biggest improvement would be to add a turbo kit. It will increase power and fuel mileage, but it's expensive.

Biggest bang for the least amount spent IMO is to try to fabricate or have fabricated a 3" set of pipes from your manifolds to the Y section, then go with a cheap 4" aluminized steel aftermarket exhaust sytem for a 94-97 PSD. Been there done that, added headers, but you will like the results even with the stock manifolds.
As posted above, open up the intake system- Check out my gallery for some pics, idea's.

if you tune up the pump how will it effect your MPG? will i get better gas mileage by turning it down? for me it has plenty of power unless ill be towing a big trailer ( which is very rare) im all about best MPG's so from t what ive read so far open the exhaust is the best thing followed by opening up the intake for free breathing and ill skip the turbo becuz for than kinda money id be better off selling mine and getting PSD...

If you turn the IP down, you will not have the power if you need it.

To increase MPG, take off slower from the stop sign.
Cruise at a lower RPM.
Light foot the throttle at all times.

When you cut the IP back to far, you wind up dropping gears to pull a hill.
Then the higher RPM sucks down more fuel than you save.

Diesels are funny creatures, do everything you can to make it make more power, then don't use the extra power.
If you can follow that statement, you have the secret for better MPG.
