Traildawg,
I was looking at summitracing.com and their pictures truckfest 2001. And I saw a truck that I was sure I had seen in a link off this site. Is this your truck pictured on the summit website??
If so, I read you dynoed that thing and it came out to 217hp and 365 tq. Thats at the rear wheel? Not bad. I imagine the cam and injectors along with the port work add the hp and the 4.30 gears add the majority of torque. What other mods have you done is that with headers? I can imagine that adding the larger sbc valves would improve things also. Did you have a custom chip done? What kind of mpg you get? Almost not quite but close to 100hp over stock, nice, very much impressed if that is your truck.

I lucked out when I was looking for a shop to do my head. The guy that owned the shop used to drag race turboed 300's and knew the head inside and out. He milled it down to give me a 9.5:1 compression ratio, installed the larger SBC valves, gave it a 3 angle valve job, and ported the intake and exhaust.
He also told me that the head mods were the #1 mod to do for performance on the 300's, as the stock head is really restrictive. Opening it up and letting it breath freely gives huge benefits, and after seeing the results on a dyno pull I believe every word of it.
As for other mods, I have an MSD Off-Road ignition system, 19# injectors, 270H cam, headers, high-flow cat and flowmaster exhaust system. I have yet to get a custom programmed chip (next thing on the list) and believe it will help alot. Between the larger cam and injectors, and the raised compression, my check engine light is always on and at times the engine will act like it wants to stall out when sitting at a light.
Hope this helps, and if ya have any more questions I'll be glad to answer them best I can.

Yeah would imagine that the chip would really help things out. Have you considered the long rod setup mentioned in a couple of places (240 rods and 302 stroker pistons KB355) would have to watch compression? That is great though, could you give me an estimated cost on the entire head work I would appreciate it? And if you don't mind me asking what is your opinion of all you have done at this point greatly satisfied or ok? Asking cause I am between converting or building six. I was leaning towards v-8 until I happened across your dyno numbers, lotta torque, nice. Again I am impressed, thank you for your time

Traildawg,
I see from your profile that you're in Delphos; I'm just west of Akron. Could you please give me the name of your shop? It's worth a couple of hours drive to find a shop who knows the engine.

hey dawg,
i was wondering of what you thought of the ignition system that you put in. by itself do you think its worth while?? wut advantages?? better mpg? better throttle response?? i dought you had it dynoed with just that mod but do you have any ideas of power gains, if it makes a noticable diffrence?? thanks any advice would be appreiciated

Sorry for taking so long to reply to you guys......I was down and out for a bit with back surgery and doing the physical theropy thing (LUCKY ME!). Anyways, here's your answers:

I thought about the stroker route, but my engine only has about 30k miles on it and I didn't want to tear into the bottom end on such a fresh engine. I was blessed with a previous owner who didn't believe in oil changes, as when the mechanic pulled the pan after throwing a couple rod bearings, he discovered almost 2 inches of crud in the bottom of it. I would like to see what a stroker would do, so why don't you go for it and be our little guinne-pig?

Sorry to give you bad news guys, but the shop is no longer around. The gentleman whom I was speaking of had a massive stroke and was left paralyzed on his left side. On a good note, I'm sure any decent, reputable head shop could give you close to similar results. I am going to try and get ahold of my uncle up in Sandusky who also used to race turbo 300's and see if he may know anyone who is still around, but he hasn't been into tinkering since the mid 70's.

The ignition didn't give any noticable power increases, but the engine did seem to pull about 500rpm higher before falling on its face, and gas milage improved very slightly. I did notice though that it started and warmed up alot faster on cold mornings, and the idle seemed to improve some and stopped surging. Was it worth it? Alone I'd say probably not, but if you've done other mods I think it would be worth it like in my case. It sure can't hurt any *shrug* :P
