Just wondered what everyones thoughts were related to Chevy's new 4.2L inline 6, and what the chances are that Ford will respond with something similar in the near future.
Personally, I think it's going to be hard for Ford to ignore, especially if GM expands the list of vehicles the 4.2 will be available in (there's already plans for it in the full size trucks and other SUV's). Given it's high power figures and the relatively good fuel milage rating I think Ford would be stupid to not capitalize on the technologies used in it and expand on them to one-up Chevy.
How's a 4.9L 24-valve DOHC sound kicking out 300+HP and 325+ft/lbs. of torque? I know I'd be waiting at the end of the assembly line to get my hands on one. Then with support from the aftermarket and our own enginuity I'm sure we could tweek them enough to get into the 375HP range, not to mention still having the possibility of supercharging! Ok, I better stop before I get myself too excited.

Well, I don't know if a I-6 will fit in the current body. Which will suit me as I drive a '96 because of the current body.LOL!!
But seriously, Ford USA has got to be looking at Ford AUS and just licking thier chops. That Down Under 250 is just as advanced as the GM engine and the Aussies have had it for years now. It is not a concept, it is a well developed and proven engine.
I just wish they would hang an Eaton on the side of it and stick it into a (better looking) F-150.
I know, style is subjective. But I really liked the last body style better.
I'm not a big fan of the newer F150's either, but if they made them look like the 250 and 350's......hehe. And why do the Aussies get an inliner and we don't? That just isn't American!
In all honesty tho, I'd like to see something like the Sport-Trac with an inline 6. If not that, create a model based on the ideas of the original Bronco.....something FUN and capable. WHo knows, maybe that's what Ford has up their sleeves with this new model they're working on to compete with the Jeep Wrong-ler. We can only hope.

Personally I think that the biggest mistake ford ever made was discontinuing the 300. also the 351 too. I have a 88' f-150 with the 300 i it and I love it. It will out pull any 302 out there. It is also a great lasting engine i have 220,000 original miles on it and still ticking. I hope that they do bring back an in-line six. and also change the body style.

If they put a more aggressive grille and a hood with a raised portion like the Superduty, they'd have a fine looking truck and could fit the Aussie six, or better yet the 300 six with a newly designed cross flow head and other goodies. I too drive a 95 for the body style. I like the hood and grille on the Superduty, but not thrilled about the fender impressions on the side. I think you also get twin-I-beam with the F250 Superduty.

Yeah, I drive a 94 with the inline 6 and love it, I really liked all of the ford full size models up until the 97 F150 and I really like the current F250. If they could make the F150 look like that it would be nice. They have always had the same cab and nose as each other, it just seems like with the 150 they are catering to the craze now that everyone wants one to drive as a car you know? Not that it is wrong that everyone wants trucks now. It just seems like the F150 is a big car now.
Why don't they make an F150 with the Superduty body and call the current F150 "Sporttruck" or something? Too bad the aftermarket dosen't make a hood/grill conversion for the F150. Not that the F150 design is bad, but it is more suited to the Lightning truck, than a work truck. As for me, I plan to keep on buying inline sixes. Dream truck is a '68 F100 with a fuel injected 300 I6 and a four speed stick.
