Rear end squeak

My 76 F150 4sp has a squeak - squeak - squeak at speeds under 15 mph when I'm crusing around in the woods. It sounded like it was maybe a left rear axle bearing and I pulled the axle and everything was tight and looked ok. The noise goes away at speed. Ideas??

If its a squeak is related to the suspension. More than likely a leaf spring or shackle. But check all of your pivot points. If your spare tire is under the frame they squeak too.

U-joint on the way out? I had the same kind of noise a year ago and could only hear it at low speed. Every time the driveshaft would make a revolution you could hear it squeak as the ujoint would move.

I'll check the U-joint. The squeak is vehicle speed related. Quiet under 5 mph, then starts, continuing faster as vehicle speed increases. It stops at about 25 mph. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Squeaks with clutch in or out, brakes on or off, pavement or dirt. It has not gotten any worse in 1,500 miles. I'm going to put it on stands and run it to see what I find. I have 14k on the rear U joint, but that's 75% off road. Sounds like a good possibility. I'll keep you posted. Thanks - Joe
