A local diesel board is having a dyno party on 12/8 and I was wondering how to get the best results, especially w/ a 5spd. The only vehicle I've ever taken on a dyno before was my old 1970 440 6 pack Roadrunner - 550hp it had. Just mash the skinny. No EGT or spool up concerns.
Cost is only $55 for 2 pulls. I've heard they can set it up to allow RPMs to increase at a rate of 100 RPM/second. I figure this might be the best method, letting the turbo spool at lower RPMs. Which gear would be best? I'm thinking 3rd or 4th.
What about tire pressure? I usually run about 60psi empty. Would lowering pressure slightly help? It would effectively reduce tire diameter. Would that help the torque?
Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!! I'll post the results.
You will want to use 4th as that is 1 to 1 with engine(i think).I'm sure guys running dyno will give you advice to get real numbers.Be sure to let us know of results.
With my 5 speed, I run it in 4th. That's the 1 to 1 ratio. If you run in OD you can get slightly better #'s. But in my opinion it's the only way to see the true HP and TQ of your engine. But that's just my opinion. As far as tips...... I go throught the gears and get into fourth like normal driving. Then I start loading the turbo by pushing on the breaks. Let it lug down to 1000 rpm, or close, knod to the dyno operator to start recording and release the brakes and stab it to about 3200 rpms. I don't lug it down that far if I'm spraying nitrous. I'll only lug it to about 1500 before nailing it. There's tons of ways to get #'s better. But you want a true reading to start with, and compare to next time. So just be consistent with whatever method you choose.
You get better numbers in od because the turbo is spooled. Running in od my boost was within a couple psi of what the truck actually runs on the street. Stock turbo probably wont be that much different between d and od, but it sure makes a difference with my truck.
Thanks guys! I'll do it that way. Cody, do you do the same thing once in 4th, then again in 5th? I'm not sure what kind of dyno it is. I'll try and call them this week to get some questions answered.
It's a Dyno Jet. It has eddy current braking and the guy says it's the best dyno in NM. Looks like it'll be a huge turnout. There's supposed to be a big convoy coming down from Durango too.
