NumberDummy, I need your help....

All right, the search goes on - I am now looking at a 1966 F100, 352 & 4 spd -

Here is my question -

The rear differential was replaced with a unit from a 1987 Econoline half ton, so what were the options as far a gear ratios on 87 Econolines?

Gotta be a little more of a road gear, wouldn't it?

Thanks,
Brian

An opinion?

LOL! No way...the info comes straight from the Ford parts catalogs.

How many of the 428,000 + members here on FTE have parts catalogs?

One would need a parts catalog to see what rear axles were available for the particular year, and how how many ratios were available.

For example: 1961/72 F100's used 4 different rear axles: 1961/68 Dana 44 LS; 1961/72 Ford 9 Inch w/ w/o LS; 1961/72 Dana 60.2 w/ w/o LS, and 1968/72 31 splined 9 3/8" ring geared 9 Inchers w/ w/o LS.

Do you know what all those ratios are? Without a parts catalog, you're SOL.

If more ppl on here had parts catalogs, I wouldn't have accumulated 10,400 + posts in a little over one year.

Abused? I'll let y'all know when.

A abused resource for sure.

A 87 Van rear will be a little wide for a slick application. It should be a 8.8, possibly a nine inch. There is a gamut of ratios avalible for the 8.8. It uses an integral center carrier for the ring and pinion and aftermarket gears go form 2.50s to 7.00.

Look for a metal tag on the rear cover bolts. this will have the installed ratio. if not there then the ratio will need to be determined by rotation the rear tires and counting revouloutions of the wheel to revs of the drive shaft.

The gist is, there can be any number of gear sets installed as the 8.8 is highly pouplar with the stang and 4x4 crowd. Its a swap so it can be assumed that nothing stock may be in side.

Last year for the Ford 9 inch: 1987.

8.8 introduced: 1983

Both rear axles were available till the 9 inch was discontinued after model year 1987.

If the OP had used an 8.8, he would have had to change the frame shock mounts, driveshaft and the spring perches.

1980/87 Bronco, F100/150 & E150 9 inch ratios available: 2.47-1 / 2.75-1 / 3.00-1 / 3.25-1 / 3.50-1.

Info source: 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog ~ Rear Axle Section 40 / Parts List # 227

Thanks guys - didn't mean to step on any toes, but a guy who spent 35 years behind the parts counter is probably going to have the answer - Thanks for all your input

I for one have some parts books...not all of them, and not of the last issue, BUT I do know for sure that Bill knows his shtuff...you dont just pull a number or an application out of thin air...I totally agree with the opinion that anyone who has worked at a dealer parts counter for almost more years then Ive been alive is a good and very much valued resource.
Think about it...imagine what the folks, myself included, would have done w/o his help....many would be SOL... Bill is the kind of partsman I am all but certain that henry is looking down and smiling at what good people have worked for his company over the years and Bill is definately one of them w/o a doubt.
I dont claim to know everything, but if one knows of one who would most likely know or could send the info seeker to one who does know the info...wouldnt that make the search for info or parts alot easier and faster for all...and isnt that what we all want...
When I go to a dealer...I look for the older fella for that very reason...cause they know their stuff.

As for the end of the 9" rearends...I hadnt known they quit making them...until now...Thanks Bill for all the info :-)
