FE390 or 351W
Well, I have a 76 F100 which had the 390 on it, it was not running, so I remove the engine and I was planning on rebuilding it, but right now money is tight, so I need to wait. I want to put a used engine so I can drive my truck, I have being looking for an used 390 but they are hard to get here in El Paso, TX, my father-in-law has a 351 with the transmission fron a Van, it was running when it was in the van, my question is, should I keep looking for the 390, or should I get the 351W, if I get the 351W, I would not rebuilt the 390, instead I will rebuilt the 351W to get more power. This truck will be a weekend truck, but I want it to have enough power.

When I got it,I check the compression and it came out low, so I remove the heads and found out that one of the rings was broken, so I remove the engine hoping to rebuilt it, but right now I do not have the money to do it, so I was hoping to find an used 390 and put in, but it is kind of hard to find a 390. Like I said, my in-law have a 351W with the tranny, so I do not if I should wait until I find a 390.

What's a half-ton truck doing with a 390? The 351 would be more suitable for your truck. The biggest of the small block engines. It'll be more economical running a 351 in there. Keep the 390 for a bit if you don't like the 351.
If you decide to get rid of the 390, sell it don't junk it.
