every body said that i did not have a big enough truck to pull my 5th wheel camper. i have a 03 f250 4x4 5.4l with 4.10 gears. they said i needed a v10 or deisel. i don't have any problems pulling my camper, but i would be a little scared to do it with a ranger. if you can do it with out problems then the guy with the f150 should not have to many problems. i don't think its the power so much but the wind. i don't know if that ranger is big enough to keep that thing straight. brakes are very important too. i would think that a f150 would have bigger brakes. how did you get a 5th wheel hitch in a ranger? the rails for my hitch are wider than a ranger bed.

my camper with all of our gear weights about 10k, so i am on the outer edge of what ford recomends and it does it just fine. if the f150 does have power problems i would change the gears to 4.10 or higher. makes a big diff in the pulling power. and its cheaper than a new truck. i pulled more weight than that with my wifes 04 explorer, but not that kind of wind resistance.

Well, a tagalong would put less weight on the truck, and wouldn't stress the axles quite as much. It would also allow a little more weight because you won't have that heavy hitch in the bed. On the negative side, bed-type hitches have less wind resistance, and they do travel better ALL IN ALL. For this size trailer I'm not sure the benefits of a gooseneck type trailer would be huge, but that's my opinion. In this setup I think a tagalong might be better, but the wind resistance still sticks out in my head as a red flag... anyone towed an enclosed trailer vs gooseneck in a 4.2L?

That I haven't done. So I can't speak on that subject.

One of the other things is the fifth wheel market is predominantly large coaches, many in the last 10 years with slide outs, and now coming with large toy hauler capabilities. But there is the small market of lightweight fifth wheels. And that's where mine falls, as does the unit UMAX is asking about.

I know on first thought you think large heavy coach, requiring 3/4 ton or larger suspension and overall chassis for safe towing. Which I fully agree with for those large units.

As for the rails they are regular Reese rails, and the universal frame bracket set. I will try to get some close ups of the rails in the bed, and the under bed mounts on tuesday or wednesday when this sleet and snow stops. The truck was bought new by my late stepfather in august/september 1998. The trailer was bought used at a local, very reputable, dealer in May 2000. I have the pics from the dealer lot, and many from there first years with it when they towed all over the eastern U.S. with it for the summer. I acquired them from my Mother for the 2006 camping season.

Alchymist-Which are you looking for pictures of? I have them all available. The Ford set ups I have mentioned I have in my Gallery (click on galleries up top, search 99 Ranger, 4x2, I have an album there titled "Towing With Fords") I have kept non ford pics off the site, but I can upload that Plymouth Grand Voyager picture too.

UMAX-I'd love to see a pic of the shorter unit, if you had a chance to get one when looking at it.

This is the exact same trailer That I am looking at and from what I was told the weight I had is wrong as this unit is just under 3000 lbs.
I don't believe under my circumstances that I would have any problems pulling it around? I was told that the trailer was towed across Canada with a Silverado 4.3 V6 with out any trouble, If a Chev can do it than I KNOW a Ford could do it...

Its a Terry by Fleetwood. And it probably is around 3000#. That will tow like a dream with your truck. Compare that to mine, which is bigger and less aerodynamic, and the same manufacturer, and mine tows very well.

I believe this is what you're looking at:

Travel Trailers & Fifth Wheels
1989 TERRY
FLEETWOOD ENTERPRISES
RESORT FIFTH WHEEL SERIES
M-18 5A

Length/Width: 18' x 8'
Axles: 2
Weight: 2960
Self-Contained: YES
