Harmonic balancer

I am completing a power steering conversion on a '69 F100. It has a 240 six. I got the pulley/balancer assembly off a '77 300 six. I have recently read that you shouldn't use the 300 balancer on a 240 because of differences in the balancers and that engine damage will result if you do. I know plenty of you guys have done conversions. Has anyone heard of this or had any problems using the 300 balancer? If my only option is to obtain a three pulley balancer off a 240, I think I will be looking for a rare bird. On top of which, I do not know of an easy way to tell the difference between the two engines other than the old dowel in the sparkplug hole trick (which can give questionable results and is a pain when cruising the junkyard). Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.
Thanks,

Steve

The best resolve for your problem is to go to you nearest local reputable part store and find a single belt that will fit the alternator, water pump, power steering application with a single pulley setup. Another option is to tear your 240-6 down and have everything balanced using the 300-6 harmonic balancer.
