yes, you can turbocharge a supercharged engine. detroit diesel actually did alot of this with their 71 and 92 series two stroke engines. we have a 6v92ta in our engine at the firehouse and the thing is a beast! just a general knowledge inquiry, or do you have an idea for some frenkenmotor in mind???
Those old detroits ran superchargers because of the design of the engine. Appearently there was no vaccum created to get air into the combustion chamder, thus they put the supercharger on them. I don't think they would start without it. Thats what I've been told anyhow.
Personally I think it would be wastful. The turbo is so much more efficient than running the supercharger. Plus the supercharger is ran off a belt which would steal power from the engine. I wouldn't know why you would want to pre-boost the air before it gets to the turbo.
the two stroke detroits did it because they did not have an overhead intake valve. the intake a hole in the inside of the block facing the valley and on the pistons way down to BDC, it opened the "intake". in order to get enough air into the engine to combust it needed to pressurize the air, thus the supercharger was added like farm said. as the need for more power presented itself to the market, fuel delivery was increased. in order to make up for the increase in fuel, a turbocharger was added to increase airflow and make more efficient combustion. hope this helps some more.
you can, its all a matter of the almighty dollar. in the long run, i dont think hp gain will cover the parasitic hp loss by the supercharger. those suckers take quite a bit of nut to turn. youd have to fully fabricate the intake for it and find a way to make the charger feed the intake. i dont think you'd be able to run a roots/twin screw blower on our engine because of the way the intake plenum is and the location of the hpop. it'd be an interesting project, but i dont think worth the time or money on a psd.
supercharger + Turbo = very efficient. The supercharger speeds up the spool time as well as provides for the lack of spool.
The 2 strokes will run without a super charger.
FEmft, I dont think they had a screw charger on them. They had the spool style like the turbo. I don't recall what they call those ones though.
Paxtons?
If nobody here knows much about 2 strokes, go find some info on it. They are really awesome machines.
