90 F150 likes to stutter a lot. It runs fine but will do this at different times. If I give it more gas, it will go away until it levels back out. Any suggestions?
Is you check engine light on?
If so check for codes.
High mile engines may need the 02 sensors replaced or cleaned.
Tune up with wires, plugs, cap n rotor.
fuel filter
injector cleaning
iac
just to name a few.
when starting, should the CEL come on for a few seconds like newer cars? If so, I have a burnt out bulb first then need to go from there. Any tips if I need to replace it.
I am having a similar problem also. When the engine is colt it runs like a sewing machine. As the engine gets to operating temp. it will start to stutter or cutout when going up a hill or increasing speed a little. When in town driving at speeds from 30 to 45 mph. it will stutter. At a stop light it idle's rough. My check engine light does not come on. My truck is a 91 also with only 89000 miles.
There are times when the transmission shifts in an out of overdrive.
They should have been able to tell you that. If one of them is your EGR the relay that controls vacum to the valve might be stuck or possibly bad. Before you buy a new one (they are $67.00) trace the vacum lines from the EGR valve to the relay I was refering to. Disconnect the positive battery terminal so the codes will clear. Unplug the wires, lines and remove the relay. On the top half you will notice that snaps on to the relay. Take a screw driver and carefully remove it. There will be a piece in there that moves up and down according to how much the EGR requires. Take some electric brake parts cleaner or some alcohol and clean the inside out,the small part and cover. Put it all back together and replace back on the engine reconnect the positive battery terminal and fire it up. With any luck you wont get a EGR code again. I did this on mine and it worked. There was quite a bit of dust when I took the top off of the relay. The top has vents in the top to let air out when the valve works.
Rabbit, there are only 2 or 3 digit codes on pre-'96 vehicles. I don't know where he got that 1293 code. Some guys at Autozone have the scanners, but not much knowledge how to use them.
First thing you should do is disconnect your negative battery cable for 10 minutes to reset your computer. Re-connect and then drive the truck for 30 minutes to get new codes. As you drive, if you get to a stop, turn the engine off for a second and restart. Then head over to Autozone for another read, paying close attention to the reader, flashes, or beeps, and post your new codes. Or, you can also do it yourself, check the link, but if you think your CEL is not working, you will need a meter. The link also contains codes and descriptions.
