Hey Guys
I'm new to the 99 -2003 side but hang out on the 55 forum.
I just bought a 2000 F250 4X4 PSD. The PO said he had a "Chip" put. He couldn't tell me what it was though. The truck runs strong but I get a Transmission shutter when it goes into OD if I am on the pedal sort of hard. PO said he asked the guy that put the chip in about that and he said it was normal and wouldn't hurt anything. I changed fluid and filter. Pan was clean. I put some shutter additive in it. Is this normal and is there anything I need to do?
Thanks
I'm not sure about the shutter. My truck doesn't do this. And it doesn't sound normal too me. As far as the chip goes, you either have a programmer downloaded to you pcm, a manual tuner,(somewhere on your dash) or a chip that is piggy-backed to your pcm. The pcm is located down by the hand brake pedal . An Aluminum/black plastic box sticking out at you from the firewall. If you don't see any of these, then you will have a programmer. He should of included the programmer with the truck. Superchips/Hypertech/Edge/Bullydog/ are the more common of the hand held programmers. Maybe someone will chime in soon with more knowledge about the Tranny Shutter..Country
if your a tranny shutter victim your, into a TC...and probly the 3rd gear set that is what I just finished being a party too....and with the torque converter and a shift kit i WAS 2300$
What is this "shutter additive" you put in? A failing tranny will exhibit more symptoms than just the OD shift although that may well be the start. I will say my TS tune never was a pleasant shift into OD while hard on the go pedal but I cannot say there was a shudder.
I didn't get the name on the bottle but it said for Ford Traasmission shutter. It seams to he helping after 200 miles or so. The Shutter or shudder, ever what it would be called is just a viberation after shifting into OD.
My trucks tranny used to shutter too untill I put that additive in it. It also helped when the programmer I had firmed up the shifts. I ran it that way for five yrs, it was there when it had 60000 miles on it. New trans at 195000. Lots of towing too. I'm not saying its right, my stock trans never ran good. Yet I got almost 200000 out of it. I also had the loud TC bearing noise for a good 2yrs at the end.
I'd get the PCM reflashed so you KNOW what is in it. Trans should NOT shudder. I have a BTS trans and had a BTS VB with DP-Tuner 60HO Tow Tune. Never shuddered.
I'm going to disagree. I wouldn't have the PCM reflashed just for this shift problem. It is probably shuddering from the simple application of "chipped" power going to the transmission. It could be anythig from a slow locking torque converter or the clutches slipping. Either way you could just ease up on the throttle a little before the shift and it should make it less. Try it and see if it helps. Your transmission is wearing out and the chip is making it wear out quicker (just the down side of running added power). You can fix it with a $4000 transmission (why not wait until it is completely gone and then spend the money) and a $400 dollar chip (which will still wear it out quicker from the added power) or you can drive it until you need to have the transmission rebuilt and then spend all your money.
My .02, Joe
Joe-M has the right idea. At least for me. I have gotten used to letting up at shift time. Maybe it will last a while ( Long While) but I do think the additive is helping. I may go 1000 miles or so and change fluid and additive again sence I didn't drain the TC this time.
Thanks guys for all of your help and suggestions. I know I will have more questions.
What you are feeling ,I believe, is Fords crappy converter lock up programming. Ford programmed the lock up to come on soft instead of instant. So when you are reasonably hard on the throttle, and applying alot of torque, the converter clutch is actually applying and disengaging a few times before it locks, thus causing it to slip. Its not good for the converter. There are kits to get rid of this, so that the TC applys more quickly. Good Luck.

my converter started to slip while engaging at about 7k miles and was about to put another new torque in it
I called John Wood for a torque and he told me to insted of buying a new torque to get a DP tuner,I did it and torqe is working good now

same here, got the DP tuner and my TQ locks up, I also had the shutter and now its gone. Also check the entire driveline for bad u-joints and carrier bearing. I also had to replace these, helped in the vibration dept. but was still there.
