The other day we got like 2 inches of rain and its the first time it has rained in a while, and it came down quite hard... Today I noticed there are marks from where it appears that water has came out the electric outlet in my bedroom... We once did have problems with water making the drywall in the ceiling crack and leak, but that was on the other end of the house....How do I go about figuring out what is causing this and how to fix it?
Ditto, call a roofing contractor and ask them to look for the problem and give you a bid to fix it. Then you can decide if you want to pay for it or do it yourself.
Most likely is from the roof. Gets inside the roof, slides down the inside surface of teh roof sheathing to where it meets the inside of the walls, then pours down your wall 'til it comes across this opening. A good place to start would be to get up into the attic and have a look around. It maybe obvious.
Of course if it was a driven rain, there's some possibility it could come in through the wall. Damaged siding? Cracked masonry? Another thing to check on the outside of the wall with the leaking outlet.
Obviously you should pull the fuse on the outlet that's leaking water 'til you get this cleared up.
I will get up into the attic in the morning after work. it is an inside wall(non load bearing) so I dont think it is from the siding or anything, has to be the roof.
Check and see if it's coming thru around a plumbing vent pipe or maybe where some TV wires are coming in. Have you gotten Cable or Sattelite TV installed recently?
That will stop power coming out the outlets, it will not stop a person being shocked from contact between the line wire going into the back of the outlet and a wet wall.
I would check all gutters and make sure they are not full of leaves and forcing water into the soffits and into the walls.
