My father-in-law has a 2001 F150 he just bought. When he sets the criuse control, say at 55, it never stays at 55. For instance, going down a hill it may go up to 75 and going up a hill it may go to 45. He called the dealership and they said that that is the way that Ford Cruise Control works. Anyone else can confirm or deny this? Also, (possibly not related), once in a while, after driving the truck for more than a hour and the truck goes to downshift or upshift it stutters and makes a ker-klunk noise before it shifts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
The factory cruise on my '99 works like this:
On level surface it holds steady.
On a downhill, if it's long enough and steep enough, the truck will pick up speed and the cruise won't do anything about it. It is the drivers responsibilty to maintain control in that situation not the cruise control.
On an uphill, when the cruise senses a 1 to 2 mph drop, it will kick in and do whatever is necessary to maintain set speed including engine screaming and the tach bouncing up to 3500-4000 rpms.
The truck will hold speed going up the mountains if I can stand to let it do so.
