Retrofitting power mirrors?

Is it relatively easy to fit power mirrors to a truck with manual mirrors (i.e. is the harness inside the door)?

good question. i think you would have to fab up your on harness and retrofit it into your truck. i am not sure if these trucks had power mirrors, i know mine doesn't have them but its a dinosaur.

The harness plug should be in side truck .If not not much to it . You will need/or make harness switches door panels ETc. Id just start with a donar truck and trace wires good luck .

Well my truck does not have the big "towing" mirrors (like yours does frankenford), it has the smaller mirrors with the plastic housing.

The power mirrors are the same design, looks like it'd be an easy swap if the wiring is there (and if I've learned anything from working on my other Fords, it probably is)

Mechanically swapping same-year power mirrors for manual mirrors is easy as they both mount the same way.

Some of the trucks actually have the wiring in the door, even though the original mirrors were manual. This is not consistant so you'll have to look to see if you're a lucky fellow or not.

If not, wiring the mirrors manually isn't a big deal. There are two motors in each mirror. One motor moves the mirror up and down, the other left and right.

Apply power one way, and the motor moves in one direction. Reverse the polarity of the power, and the mirror moves the other way. So each mirror needs four wires to achieve this.

And you can use any ford mirror switch you want, assuming you can mount it somewhere in the door panel or on the dash. Obviously factory parts for your year range would make this much easier but there's nothing stopping you from grafting a switch from something else into your truck. When I get around to installing my power mirrors on my crewcab, I'll be using a mirror switch off an oldsmobile - it's very, very tiny compared to most switches allowing for easy installation in the dashboard - it snaps into a rectangular hole which is easy to make with a nibbling tool and a file.
