My brother just bought a 1979 F-150 4x4 VIN# F14BRFF0102 with a manual transmission and a 300 six. I am trying to help him fix it so it can pass I.M. The Trouble is the Hayes Manual is lacking info. I need the proper vacuum diagrams for this truck. I also need to know if the truck originaly had a Cat. in the exhaust. There are no stickers under the hood or on the engine with this info. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer. Russell Brown
Russel,
What you're looking for doesn't come easy. What is I.M.? I assume some sort of emissions testing? I'm just about ready to present my '79 to the CA SMOG ****'s. I believe by '79 Ford was putting CATS on all of their F150's and 100's to comply with CA emissions. The H.D. motors didn't have a CAT, but you have a VIN "B" (Light duty 300-6). I was lucky enough to find someone in the '67-'79 forum to send the applicable diagrams. I can try to help, yet my truck has AT and is 2WD. I know their are some differences. I'll look around for the diagrams I had. Try posting your request in the previously mentioned forum. Another idea is to check you local library some of them (not mine) have some of the old ford books - that's where the one fella that helped me out go the info. Getting the diagram is tough, finding all the necessary goodies that some fool ripped off and threw in the trash can is even harder. I'm familiar with most of the hard parts. If you have a specific question I may be able to help you.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-02 AT 09:59 PM (EST)]Just looked in Chilton's "pickup & bronco 1976-86 repair manual" and it has 15 different vacuum schematics for the '79 4.9 engine. I got this book at Checkers for 10-15 bucks. It has wiring schematics too.
