I've been looking for a website like this for a while and am glad I stumbled upon it.
I have a 1997 F150 4x4 with the 5.4L engine. I'm having problems lately with the shift on the fly 4x4. Normally it has worked fine, but lately when I turn the **** to 4x4 or 4x4L there is nothing. No lights go on, no clicking, and no noise of activation. Has anyone ever had to deal with this? I have one of those Hayes repair manuals and they talk a little bit about an electric shift motor, but nothing directly talking about the symptoms by truck is displaying.
are you talking about trying to engage on the fly? or sitting in Neutral?
if it does not engage either way....it is most likely the electric shift motor....that seems to be a common problem...i am not sure myself becuase my truck has a manual T-case lever.....but i do believe you can get under the truck and move the motor manually to get it to engage.
i am sure someone will chime in here soon with a better response....
If the dash light does not come on, then the transfer case has not enguaged. The shift motor is a very common failure with the ESOF. You can remove (unbolt) the shift motor from the transfer case and pull it out a little bit while someone else turns the **** on the dash. Look to see if the shift motor does anything.
