i have a 1979 F150 supercab 4x4 with massive rust holes everywhere, the cab is completely beyond repair (in my opinion) so i plan on taking the cab off my 1977 F150 supercab 2wd, i went out to the 77 today and just started unbolting everything i could get my wrench to, but then stopped to think.
are the 2wd and 4wd cab mounts the same?
and
what am i getting myself into? i've never done this before so i was hoping to get some input before i dig myself into a project i wont finish
Itll work. Thats what im doing. 75 supercab 150 2wd onto a 78 supercab 250 4wd. Before you pull the 2wd cab youll need to cut out the whole in tranny tunnel for the 4wd shifter. It has a guide line on where to cut pressed into the metal. Just look at your 4wd cab for reference.
Nope. Youll need the complete harness from the 77. where they hook up at the firewall and go back to the tail lights is different from 77-78. Not a big deal though. Bout a 20 min job.
so i will need wiring harness from the 4x4 cab and the 4x4 steering column, and to cut a hole in the 2wd cab for the transfercase shifter, if im missing anything let me know
how long does it usually take to finish? im in no rush but i got a chevy lovin' buddy who says he did a cab swap on his 79 chevy truck in a day by himself
Hes full of crap. Itll take longer than that and i dont think theres a way to do it alone. Yeah your pretty mcuh correct on everything. Your only prob will be wiring hanress swap. If you take the whole deal from cab to cab itll take awhile. Ive done it so much i can do it in about an hour. What tranny is in both? You might just have to change to column. And actually theres a way to use the 2wd column but its hard to explain.
Ok go look at the tranny on the 78. Youll see a switch where the linkage hooks up to it. Itll have wires comin out of it. Then look in the center of the firewall and youll see a gray plug with wires goin down the tranny tunnel. Its for the reverse lights and the neutral safety switch. Then take a look at the 77 and see if its the same. If not look at the base of the steering column and see if it has a switch on it.
the 77 isint going to have the reverse light hookups or neutral safety, a floor shifter from an early model mustang is jerry rigged to the trans and nothing electronic is hooked up to it
