I'm running a 289/ C4 tranny. The engine was built by me. I'm running headers, a cam, larger valves, an intake, Edelbrock 600 carb. I took a ride on the freeway and got 24 mpg. City I get about 20. That's with 2.75 gears in the rear. When I was running 3.5 gears, I got about 14 mpg. When I first rebuilt the engine, it was dyno'd at 281 horsepower @6000 rpm and 320 ft pd of torque. I don't have the horsepower of the big blocks, but have enough to make people turn their heads.
I drove 175 miles each way to the Turkey Rod Run this past holiday weekend and got 16 mpg with the olds motored 55 f-100. We ran 80 ~ 85 mph. 307ci, O/D automatic, 2:56 rear gear.
I got chastised on this same subject in a thread last year, but I'll say again my '79 351 W smog motor, stock save for Edelbrock Performer intake and carb prolly gets 10-11 mpg. 3.00 rear and frame mounted tank, not sure of the size, but It MUST be small, cuz once it starts dropping, it drops like a rock. I confess I have not as yet measured the milage.
truxx not to beat a dead horse but plenty of power ? with a 305 chubby ? man we used 'em as boat anchors as thats pretty much what they are . even stuck one in one of the bomber dirt cars when the 400 said adios . hades the one front driver at the time with a v-6 bonneville lapped me . it was embariskin !!!!!! the one i had in an 79 caprice got crappy mileage , and it was a well taken care of car it was my grandparents ol' car . it got a measly 12 in town and about 18 on the road .
6. Not 10.6 Not 18.6 6.00 is all I get. 360 4spd. 8000lb flatbed. At the current price of gas, it costs me .57 per mile to turn the wheels. I try not to think about it.

At least not the equation you worked it out to be and put down. .57 cents a mile? A mile isn't that far? And our gas prices aren't as high as some other places. Geez! that's painful! I drive 14 miles one way to work, that mean if I used your truck to go to and from work it would cost me, $15.96 a day just to go to work, I'm not stopping to get a bite to eat either.

Try 100 miles round trip to work each time and 100 miles round trip to dialysis 3 days a week. I am thankful for half way decent mileage!
i hadda old pontiac parisienne kickin round here about the time my 223 was givvin up the ghost(257,000 miles) so i stuck this 305/ 700r-4 combo,in my 58 panel with 9inch 3.50 rear gear and the tranny lockup wire not connected, slid an economy cam in, and one of the guys @ work jetted the quadrajet carb down for me.
on straight hi-way runs i can get 30mpg easy, with still lotsa gettupn'go when i gotsta pass somethin' but lookout when those 4bbls open then ya can see the gas needle go down......ain't real good pokin around town either.
someday i'd like to hook up the lockup wire, apperantly there is a kit out there to do it. but kits cost $$ & i aint got none of that right now to spare.
