HI, I have a 2300 holley, I've just fitted to my engine. I've managed to get it to run, but it has a problem which is preventing me from tuning it.
When I rev it up to say 4000rpms and look into the barrels, there is fuel piddling out of the accelerator pump discharge nozzles. It doesn't do it at idle. I've looked, and the needle which sits in the hole to prevent this very fuel siphoning problem is there. I've tried to swap to a smaller nozzle, including trying one which doesn't have the squirters that protrude out. And I've tried swapping the needle for another one.
Some holleys have a ball and a weight instead of this needle thingee, but all the carbs I've pulled apart in my crusade to fix this have had the needle.
Any ideas guys?
Bart, I think you're on the right track, fuel is being pulled in to the airstream due to the velocity. I would double check the check valve in the fuel discharge oriface. Holley made many styles of discharge nozzels; with tubes, without and a rectangular style Anti-pullover style. I will check the book, in the mean time I'm sure someone else will chime in.
Yeah I saw that in my book too. I'd Try a Ball and weight if I could find some. I think I read something about the anti pullover nozzle was intended for a carburator which has different fuel pump circuitry to the 2300/4150/4160's
I emailed holley to ask their advise about how to remedy this ailment. They gave me the PH number of a place called McClenen (spelling) carburator. I rang them. The man I spoke to is a holley guru. He said that the problem I was describing is common with the 2300. He said that the tube style discharge squirters don't help any. However he has developed a kit to fix it. I've ordered a kit which has a special spring and some packing shims, to keep the check needle seated when the pumps not squirting.
