Newer model steering wheel?

Does anyone know if a steering wheel from a later model truck will work? The styling is obvioiusly different, but the underside looks the same to my untrained eyes. The splines may be different and I'm not sure about the cruise operation. Has anyone done this or know if it will work? They are much easier to find in good condition than the older ones, and usually cheaper, too.

The 87-91 wheel should fit...from what I understand you need to make sure you don't mix and match cruise/non-cruise components.

It wont matter about the cruise. I put a turnsigal switch from a 90 ford with CC on the wheel into my 85 with no CC and all the wires were exactly the same.

You didn't specify what year your truck is ( ), but your profile sez 1983 F150.

According to the 1980/91 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog > >

1983/91: F150/350 / Bronco / Econoline steering wheels interchange.

Sorry, NumberDummy. You're right, it is an '83 and I do have a working cruise control. We've got some really long stretches of road in Texas and I do not want to give that up. I'll live with a ratty wheel rather than give up the convenience and the relief it gives to arthritic knees.

If your cruise buttons are mounted on the wheel and not on the TS stalk, it would most likely work. The plugs between the newer and older trucks are exactly the same, same colored wires in the same positions. If your CC is on the stalk it wouldn't affect that either. The plugs are prewired for CC whether your truck has it or not. I tore the 90' column apart and there were no extra wires that my 85 didn't have. If this had come up a few months ago, I could have sent you the CC steering wheel from the 90' Ford I parted out, but it went to the recycler with the cab and little bit of frame I didn't use.

Did you complete this project, and if so, what steering wheel did you use? What if any problems did you encounter? I also live in Texas and with the loooong stretches of roads we have, it's a necessity for cc.

OK, so the steering wheels will interchange.

Is the steering column itself the same for the '87 - '91 as the '84 - '85 models?

What if I wanted to keep my original steering wheel on my '85. Could I use a steering column from a later '87 - '91, and then use my '85 steering wheel to retain the original look?

I know the gear shift selector lever is also different, but could I switch those out too?

Well, I must be doing something wrong - I can't PM you. Anybody want to educate me? Do I need to have a certain set amount of posts before I can?

If you click on someone's username, you will see the options.

I don't believe you are allowed to post contact info directly in threads unless it's the classified section.

These are typical rules of any forum.

LMAO, well when I click on your name, then public profile it tells me: "uncle.stosh has no contact information."

So, I'm assuming I don't have enough posts to access your profile.
