If you drive above 50MPH the speedo starts to flicker up and down real quick. And isnt that bad until you get above 65 when I get above 70 its starts to do it worse jumps from the 80 back to the 60 really quick. And when you get above 75 it jumps aorund like crazy from 85 to 40 real fast. What exactly is the problem there is a brand new VHS sensor and the wires are new about a foot back from that. The speedo was just replaced from one in the junkyard with 80K miles on it. And I turn the key to the one positoion while holding the button and it checks out.
Would old rear end fluid mess with the reading of this because there is metal in the fulid. Because when I pull the sensor out there is a few metal shavings on it and I clean them off with a rag and it seems to slow the flickering for a few miles but it comes right back
your speedo is in your tranny is it not... ive changed 3 speedo gears and they all get worn out becuse the master gear in my tranny is worn(no clue how)
There is a part in the rear end called an exciter ring, it sends the signal to the VSS mounted on top of the diff. Open up your rear diff and make sure that ring is nice and clean. If that doesn't solve it, you may have a bad wire somewhere. With the VSS and the speedo replaced I don't think it could be anything else.
First off, it helps to tell us the specifics of your truck--year, model, engine, tranny, rear end, etc. This is obvious because someone already posted about the speedo pickup being in the tranny, something that went away after '91.
As for the exciter ring having metal shavings on it, I'd say that means potentially a couple of things. One, at the very least you should drain, clean and refill your rear end. Two, if the problems continue, your rear end is probably shot and would need a rebuild--new gears, carrier, axles, whatever it takes.
There's little reason for an exciter ring to break in and of itself, but the metal shavings could be an indication that your ring and pinion are worn and sloppy, and may be chewing on each other, producing the metal shavings that are not playing nice with the VSS.
