What type of tranny fluid should be put in a 2001 F250 with the 5.4? I assumed Dextron III but wanted to make sure. Thanks!
=================================
Look at the handle on the trans dipstick. If it says Mercon V, then you need Mercon V (five). If it says Mercon (without the "V"), then you need regular Dexron/Mercon.
Ford has stopped production (rebranding--they don't make their own) of regular Mercon. They now approve using Mercon V in all of their transmissions that used to call for regular Mercon. The only drawback is that Mercon V costs about triple of what Dexron/Mercon costs.
I am not an expert in this at all, but I've heard and seen posted here many times that the ONLY tranny fluid you should use in the Torqshift(5R110) is Mercon SP. You can call any dealer and they should be able to tell you for sure what to use in your truck.... I'm not sure when the Torqshift came out.
You are correct about only suing Mercon SP in the TorqShift, however the TorqShift is only in the 2005 and up trucks (or any 2003 and up truck with the 6.0L powerstroke).
For his 2001 with the 5.4L, Mercon V is now the suggested fluid.
