02 f-350 4x4 auto locking hubs.. i took my truck to get new tires and they told me that my passenger side wheel bearing was bad. theyy took me out in the shop and showed me that the wheel was wiggly on pass. side but not on the drivers side.. i ordered a new hub and bearing from ford and i decided to tackle this job today, and when i got the old hub and bearing off , i dont see anything wrong with the bearing, however, i can wiggle the axle shaft, just wondering if this is normal and i should clean and re grease everything, and put everything back together or is there something else wrong??? please help!! thx
When doing my ball-joints I had mine down all the way to sliding the axles out. I guess I'm just not picturing where you're at right now (disassembly). But yes, I'd say if you had wobble or clunking while grabbing the top of the tire you have bad bearings. And once you break it down, the bearing wouldn't "look" bad unless they're dry and scored.
Tell us about how far you have it disassembled. If it wiggled with your everything all the way to the tire then yes I'd bet bearings are bad. BUT........if you have the tire, clipper, rotor, 4x4 locking hub assembly off all the way down to the small end of the axle, but outside of the knuckle, then yes I'd say you will get a little wobble.
yes i have it torn down all the way to the short axle shaft sticking out, in other words, i should be ready to instal new hub and bearing... but i got scared when i seen how the short axle shaft wobbles around
Yep, IMO you're ready to install the new bearings and put it back together. You probably had to PB Blaster (or equal) just to get it apart, but I'd take the time to clean everything up really good to prevent seizing for the next time you have to tear it apart (IE BALL-JOINTS).
Cool. But while you're there, see that yellow o-ring in the second picture? Clean it up really good and apply some Silicone lube. That is what seals the vacuum for your 4x4 Auto/Lock hubs.
ok i put the new hub and bearing on and put it all back together and everything is tight, no more wobble...the only thing im worried about now is inside the knuckle there is some kind of seal that is just loose or dangling, and that is why the axle shaft was so wobbly, it looks to me like, if i dont replace them, theres going to be dust and moisture getting to the needle bearings...there is two of these seals that is loose, one on each side of the u joint

That's the dust boots, it is part of the seal but it doesn't really do much. The knuckle seal functions just fine without them, so don't worry too much about it. I replaced my knuckle seal and axle dust boot when I replaced my ball joints and that ring was torn loose and just hanging there again within 18 months.
just to ask did you check the outter axel seal for th short shaft it slips over the shirt axle shaft and mounts into the spindle if that is ripped water WILL get in there and eat your new bearing and also not allow you auto hubs to vac lock. just to let you know its a over looked part. when my seal ripped it let that short shaft flex all over the place and a new seal fixed this and many other things. also some times you don't need to replace the whole hub but just the bearing. the bearing is 14$ just so you know. you can check that bu pulling the bearing out of the hub and putting it on the shaft and seeing if it moves much. just a little info for someone if they need it.
oh i have a pic of the dust seal there right after 99.5 they started putting them on its just a feel good part.
yes, the outter half shaft will have some place to it even with the hub still in place. You were so close, you should have pulled the whole shaft right out and replace the outter seal and inner dust boot while you were at it. The $14 needle bearing mentioned above is definitely worth replacing as well, but even with a new bearing, the shaft does still have some play. Sometimes you actually have to wiggle your shaft some it get your hubs installed, as least you do when installing aftermarket hubs with tight spec's.
The outter seal is a dealer only item and is about $45. Inner dust boost are about $10 and are a standard size seal available anywhere.
not just a dealer only you can get them online from quad4x4.com just putting it out there. but yeah if you have to go as far as the hub just replace all the seals.
WELL i do wish that i had put new seals since i was already there...but now that it is over i was looking at the old hub and bearing, and i dont think replacing just the needle bearing would have worked , it looks to me like, there is slop coming from somewhere else, possibly another bearing up in there somewhere...also my new hub did not come with a new yellow gasket, so i used my old one..if i had it to do over , i would get the new yellow o ring and i would have replaced those seals around the axle...
