Cool Milage

Hey yall. My name is Austin. I have a 02 250 4dr 4x4 7.3, n 3.73's. I love it! Im used to getting 15-16 mpg, 19.5 is the best ive ever gotten. But here lately, ive been averaging 10-12 mpg! I dont have ne mods, jus stock staight pipe. I used to have a 99 black f150, 5.4,3.73's, 6 inch lift, 35s, chip, intake, exhaust, headers..and got bout 14.5. Does anyone know why its drinkin so much dam diesel? I could easily pull almost 400 miles a tank, thats wit a 25 gallon tank, 27 if its dead *** empty. Now its sitten on 3/4 tank at 200 miles. Cmon now..i got the stroke for milege..im serouisly thinken bout traden for a cummins if i cant get this P.O.S. fixed! Its had a chip in it, but had to take it out n reflash the comp to stock settings. Ive been told that it needs back preassure..but can the lose of almost 5 mpg is due to a dam muffler?Any advice or helpful hinters would be apprechiated.

I would check for any oily residue or dirt around IC boots -Should be 6 total boots. I assume you dont have a boost gauge?

Welcome to FTE Austin.Check your up pipes for leaks too. If you see soot around the up-pipe flanges, you have a leak. This will hurt yor fuel economy too. And no back pressure is needed for the Diesel. Thats only on the a Gas motor. Country

no..no guages yet. ive had it in the shop because i thought i blew the injectors, n it turned out that the turbo wasnt kicken on till highway speeds. That was n summer. I dont drive the **** out of it, but it will run if i need it to. Ive tryed diesel additive, that seemed to work for a lil while.

ya...i thought diesels didnt need ne back preassure. The mechanic tryed to tell me that the stock 3.5 pipe is oversized exhaust. If they make aftermarket exhaust with stock mufflers n converters, then i think hes full of ****. he said that bigger pipe id bad for it. i want t run 4" pipe to a 6" tip. It already sounds like a peterbilt when i let off and that turbo sucks up. Ive set off car alarms n scarred the crap outta people, some of them even honk or hit the brakes, that straight pipe sounds good.

HAH HAH HAH, yeah most of here run 4" from the turbo all the the way out to the stacks or the exhaust tip behind the wheels. Some of the guy's here are even running the 5" cannon exhaust. It starts out 4" at the turbo for about maybe 2 feet, then transitions to 5" all the way to the 7"stacks or the 7" tip. This setup is real loud!! But don't be to hard on Your mechanic, just doen't know diesel's is all. I can't tell yah how many people approach me, after looking at my truck and start making suggestions on what I should do, to make my truck run fast. They always mention Edge, Bullydog, and Banks. This tells me right away that they have no clue what there talking about. Anymore I just smile say thanks and walk away. If I charged $ for the time I spend trying to educate people about the 7.3's, and diesel's in general, I'd be a Rich Man. I can't even imagine what some of the other guys here go thru that actually know these motors and diesels in general, better than Me. SpringerPOP, Kwikk, Kris, Jeremy, Mike, Neal, Ron ,Gene and a few other I've missed. You need answers, these are the guys to talk to. Sorry if I've missed anyone.Take care.Country

This might sound like a stupid question and I do not intend to insult you but is your milage hand calculated or are you going of the overhead lie-o-meter?

no, i reset the milage every time i fill up, n divide the milege by the gallons. That overhead is always off. but suprisingly, for right now, its pretty acurate, but ive that its off at least 2 r 3 miles on the mpg's. And wuts a SAFE mod that can increase my mpgs n make it run. I know you have to watch ur egt's, tranny temp close t make shure ur not meltin it down. I have 113k on it,wuts something safe, and from someone that knows wut their talkin bout!

It seems that the DP tuner just might be the best for our trucks. And their Customer Service is rivaled by none. I don't personally run a Dp tuner on my turck. I have a tuner that was customed tuned to my turbo and injectors from Di Performance. I do like my Tuner and it does exactly what David at DI performance said it would. That being said, I will be installing a DP tuner on my 02 EX soon. Country

You live right down the road from T Wildman. www.totaldieselperformance.com

He can make you a chip that will suite your needs. Tony is a great guy(his # is on the website or send me a PM). But before you do that you need to get some guages, possibly an air intake, and get the truck checked out if you are having problems. Tony can hook your truck up to his laptop and check things out. In addition, the guys from North Texas Power Stroke Association are in your backyard. A great bunch of folks (most of them ) and they get together about every month in your neck of the woods.

all that aside, it's this stinkin winter blend fuel.
my truck went from getting mid 13's to barely 10 in a fill-up AND the price keeps escallating. I'm parking mine as soon as I can find something that gets 26mpg or better... see https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ss-a-rant.html this thread

well if the turbo was not kicking in your would use more fuel to try to comp for lack of boost. i was getting 16mpg checked the boota and changed fuel filter now getting 19 . just my 2 ct

I too agree with the winter blend having an effect. I am watching my gas milage again drop..every year. Suggestion though, remove the connectot at the EBPV, at least you will have less wasted energy. My thought at least.
