what is the cure for valve clatter. I occasionally have valve clatter when accelerating with a load or up a hill. as well as my moms truck. what can be done to stop valve clatter?
yep...I've got the same valve train noise. The noise occurs below about 1500 rpm under load. As far as I can tell, it's the hydraulic lifters and many people have told be this is "normal" I6 wear. I have to say though, it is annoying. Valve noise can be caused by low oil pressure to the valve train such as a spun cam bearing, so you might want to check oil pressure, but this is not likely. Number of miles on the engine and oil change history can have some impact as well. Short of replacing the lifters, pushrods...etc. I have never been able to get a strait answer as to a cure for this. Also, a badly leaking exhaust manifold gasket can often sound like a valve tick.
well...I've been told this before, but I run 89 octane (93 dosen't make it any better) the timing is set at 10 deg BTDC. My idle mixture is set as well as I can, so I don't think that's what it is.
Sounds like the pcm computer is not advancing the timing. Ford did not put a vacume advance in this dist . Also check the egr valve as it is supose to reduce pinging. I also run platuim plugs andd mid to high grade gas .
