The wife's expy wouldn't start this morning. The battery is fairly new and checked out with over 12v. I tried to jump the starter from under the truck and nothing but a few sparks. Everything points to a new starter. Anything I should look out for when replacing? It looks easy to get to and straightforward.
Remove and replacement is actually pretty easy. I just got the starter rebuilt by some local gents and it looks like they replaced a brush set and the solenoid. As soon as I took it off I could see the ground strap from the solenoid to the starter was corroded in two pieces.
There are two bolts (13mm), one on the side that you can see and another on the top side that you can barely feel. Get yourself a ratchet and extension to reach both. The third bolt does double duty as a ground so you will need a deep well socket for it. It is easy to reach. After I had the experience of taking it out it actually only took my 20 minutes to put it back in.
hi chuffman, I was just told that my starter was bad. what are the chances the solenoid is the only problem? It is getting juice at the starter but takes several clicks of the ignition to get it to turn.
