I just got done hacking off my muffler, and while I was under there I wiggled the sensor on the diff. Not a lot... because my trouble light died, and it was really dark under the truck, but a little. When I got in for my testdrive I almost made it out of my driveway with the light off. Once I got about 3/4 of the way (about 100 ft) down the drive it came on and stayed on. Wiggling it helped lol
I'll take it off once I get back into the garage and clean it out. I don't remember the exact code, but when I see my buddy with the scanner again, I'll get it. I should have the problem fixed before I see him though
K, well since we've had some snow up here in Buffalo I've had a chance to try out the ABS. What I've noticed is that because the light is on, when the ABS tries to kick in, the light goes off. I feel in the pedal that the ABS is working, but once I start rolling again the light comes back on immediately.
Haven't pulled it yet. Last time I worked on the truck was installing my DP Tuner... that was in a blizzard, and I haven't felt like crawling under there lately.
Great post - Can I trouble shoot a 94 aerostar the same way?
I am new too and glad I joined that was a heck of a post. I have been searching the internet for about a week and have found a lot of different hits for people with this similar problem. Of all the information I found the best was on this site so I decided to join and and within five minutes found barneys post and it really tied all the ideas I had swirling around together and shed some real positive light on an otherwise long and dark tunnel. Thanks a lot for making what was seeming impossible possible and giving me some confidence to move forward with the repair. I have a 94 aerostar van will i be able to follow these trouble shooting recommendations or does anyone know of any big differences I need to be aware of?
I know on 99-04 SD trucks the abs light will come on if there is a problem with the speed sensor in the rear diff, or either one of the front sensors goes bad - just from experiemntation - tried all this by unplugging them on my truck - i have a 2003 F250 5.4L gas
Anyway - With my rear diff unplugged I still get speed but also get an abs light.
I would check the three sensors - like the people above mentioned. When and if the wheel bearings start going bad (sealed assy they stink) the metal bits may get in there and cause the front sensors to mess up.
I have had family visiting so have been unable to get under the van but I am going to get out there as soon as I am done writing this. I am a little concerned about being able to find the sensors. From diagrams I have seen the one in the back will not be a problem but I really have no idea where the two in the front are. Any info on that would be helpful. Also my horn and cruise control are not working and i read in a thread (that i can no longer find) that it could be some kind of a coil (i think) in the steering column. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.
You are right about getting on the aerostar post. I am not really sure how I find that. Can one of you guys just let me know exactly how to do that and thanks for the help. I'm lucky i found the post at all let alone going off topic but thanks.
My ABS light is staying on. I noticed that when I first start my truck with my foot on the brake the light stays off after the selt test until I relaease the pedal and apply the brakes again. After that it just stays on. The speedo is working normal and I cleaned both front wheel sensors. Also, I check for codes with my OB2 checker and there are no codes at all. Any suggestions?
