I have a 1978 F100 straight 6 that tapps loudly every time I give it gas. No tap at idle, and no tap while coasting...but touch the gas, and it hammers away. Is this an exaust manifold leak? Or maybe a bad valve tap? Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Assuming your timing is accurate, either diagnosis could be correct. You can use a stethescope to see if you can isolate the cylinder(s), better yet use a vacuum gauge.
Did this problem suddenly occur? Or if the truck has been sitting for a long time, sometimes a few lifters can stick. I had this problem, and an oil change with a qt. of Rislone solved it after 200 mi.
Something you can do quickly is pop the valve cover and check the valve adjustment, and anything obvious with your springs, guides, etc.
