i have a 1984 inline and the carberater has gotton to the point were it is time to replace it. will any year inine fit on my 1984 or should i stay in the 1980's? also were can i find a adapter for a open air filter that would fit my 1 barrel?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Feb-02 AT 04:20 PM (EST)]If all the computer/electronic stuff is still working, I highly recommend staying with the correct appication for your year. Others can work but there are subtle differences you may be able to go to a '83, but the automakers were doing all kinds of wierd stuff back then trying to meet emissions and deal with the new technology. The single barrels are quite easy to rebuild - I'd buy a rebuild kit or just buy a whole new unit.
-Wanted to mention, even on my old '79 the replacement YFA was $250 for the rebuilt unit. Probably close to the same for yours...
If you don't have to deal with smog *****, i'd swap to an older carb ONLY if you also swap out the distributor and go completely with the DSII ignition instead of the TFI you've got. Otherwise get a replacement electric carb. Grab the distributor from an 7*-83 f-truck and get snag a carb at the same time. Or, you could just swap the intakes and run a 4bbl (though you'd still need to swap the distributor and ignition).... To answer your question, the carb should be the same from 84-86.
Aha! a post i can reply to. i bought an 85 bronco that needed a carb rebuild pronto, as in we barely got it home. anyhoo, i had my mechanic uncle rebuild it w/a napa kit, and i put it all back together as best i could. i'm sure it would run better if i hooked everything up right, but regardless, over christmas break i took it off and bolted on the carb off my 77 I6 (no extra NUTHIN)....and it worked just fine...except for one slight error regarding a vaccuum line from the tranny to the carb controlling shift points. that made things rather stressful for a day, but if that could be fixed, i would've probably left everything like it was. how wrong would i have been? that was my first foray into messin' with carbs. good luck!
