Front end problems

I went to get a front end alighment and they told me the drag links needed replaced But what they showed me was the inner tie rods and center link and bushing that hooks them together. They wanted $511.00 to get those parts replaced I told them forget it. I looked up the parts that they said i needed and they are about 130.00 I think I need another opionin Is it hard to change those parts out? Thanks chad

No, they are generally easy, hardest part is getting everything lined up again, at which point you mideaswell take it to the alignment shop. if your replacing the whole thing, its a little easier to get it close.

They are no different than doing any tie rod end. You'll find most part stores will list them as inner tie rod end driver side and passenger side. Buy a good part with a lifetime warranty if you plan on keeping your truck for a while. I've owned a lot of Ford's, and that is one part that wears out a lot. Especially the driver's side at the pitman arm.

Just count your threads and how many turns it takes to remove the old one's from the sleeves, like we've been doing for years. I would take her in for an alignment when done anyways so you keep the wear down.

If you have a Harbor Feight near go pick up the Pitman Arm remover, as the regular sized press out style tie rod remover is too small.

Good luck,

Austin

If you don't take the tierod ends of of the knuckle it will not need an alignment. They only theng the length of the draglink changes is whether or not the steering wheel is centered or not.

It needs a front end alignment anyway since I did upper and lower ball joints and new shocks a couple of weeks ago

That is true. I guess I assumed they finished the alignment then told you the rod ends were bad

Agreed. Mine needed a big time alignment after I did the ball-joints. And if you mean YOU did the ball-joints then your current deal is a cake walk. And if not, then it still is. Go to Advanced Auto and get the loner tool kits and put your new parts on and then take it in for an alignment.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.
