Tranny and flywheel question

Lightbulb Tranny and flywheel question

The flywheel on my 89 f250 supercab diesel (4x4) 5 speed has been going bad for a while. It will start to rattle at idle, and the symptom has been getting more frequent. It is now starting to rattle in the gear on take off from a dead stop. At the moment I can not afford a flywheel conversion kit from Luk, my guestion is will the flywheel, clutch, and 4 speed tranny from a 85 6.9 work on my 7.3. I have access to a complete setup including the matching tcase.

I have seen a mod done to the DMFW to make it a single mass... it will have the same effect of the LUK and cause gear rollover noise in the trans... The DMFW is there to absorb the shock of the diesel engines operation/shutdown. You may be able to find a new DMFW on ebay occasionally.

6.9 and 7.3 flywheels are different and not interchangeable....

the 6.9 flywheels and the 7.3 flywheels are the same thign if you want to you can put a 6.9 flyhweel/clutch/pressureplate/bellhousing/tranny and transfercase into your truck ant take the 5 speed out. I have jsut done this to my truck and no problems at all.

I thought a 6.9 and a 7.3 (has more of a counter weight) Flywheel are balanced differently from one another! Am I wrong???

If that's true then you can balance one to the other with no problems. I have done that on several flywheels myself. JMHO

I have run a 6.9 flywheel on a 7.3 engine with no balance issues and no strange vibrations.

Should work the other way as well.

I think you will miss fifth gear though.

With a 4 sp tranny will the driveshafts still be the correct length?
