Just curious. I've just bought a 94 XLT 4x4 for my kid. I've been a long time Aerostar owner getting almost 300K miles out of a 91 XLT and getting rid of it a two years ago. Anyway the most serious problem I had was the A4LD Tranny. I figured the Explorers had the A4LD just like the van did when I bought the truck today. After reading a few posts it seems as though at least the 2 wheel drives have that version.
My question is does the 4x4 also have the A4LD?
Thanks for the help

Yes. My 92 Explorer XLT 4x4 had the notorious A4LD. I had such problems with it, had it completely rebuilt and still had trouble. Hopefully yours won't be so bad.
4.0 Beast, did you have an external cooler on yours?
The general concensus seems to be that an external cooler is a MUST and that all of the high mileage units have one. My truck has 180k on it without a problem with the trans and I have an external cooler.
I can't remember, its been 2 years since I got rid of it. It did however have the towing package so I don't know if the oil cooler came with that package.
My 97 that I have now has that oil cooler, what a great option considering where I live it hits around 115 daily in the summer...
Yep, it does have the external cooler. I had decent luck with my old one, keeping the fluid fairly fresh and not abusing the vehicle too much. I know they are indeed notorious for blowing up though. I'm hoping to just get a year or two out of this then will either rebuild the entire vehicle myself or dump it.
